Biography of Dino Cicarelli

Dino Ciccarelli is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played 19 seasons in the National Hockey League, primarily with the Minnesota North Starts as well as the Detroit Red Wings. In his NHL career, Dino scored 1,200 points and was later elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.

His 608 career NHL goals are the most goals scored by a draft-eligible player who was not selected by an NHL team. It has two sports bars; one across from the Auburn Hills Palace and one at the site of the former Bar outpost in downtown Detroit, near the Cobo Center.

Dino grew up playing hockey in Sarnia, his hometown in Ontario. In the fall of 1975, he was part of Sarnia’s Jr ‘B’ hockey team and ended up leading in goals with 45 goals and 43 assists for 88 points in just 40 games.

He later joined the OMJHL’s London Knights at age 16 for the 1976-77 season. In his first season with the Knights, Ciccarelli had 39 goals and 82 points in 66 games, finishing fifth in the team’s scoring. The North Stars kept him with the Knights in 1979–80, and Ciccarelli bounced back, scoring 50 goals and 103 points. In five playoff games, Ciccarelli scored two goals and finished with eight points.

Dino made his professional hockey career debut with CHL’s Oklahoma City Stars at the end of the 1979-80 season. In six games with the team, Dino scored three goals and five points. On March 7, 1989, the North Stars traded him and Bob Rouse to the Washington Capitals for Mike Cartner and Larry Murphy.

Throughout his career, Ciccarelli has represented Canada in several international competitions. Ciccarelli led Canada to a fifth-place finish at the Helsinki World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in 1980 with five goals and six points in five games.

Ciccarelli helped the Canadians win the bronze medal at the 1982 IIHF World Hockey Championships in Finland with two goals and three points in nine games. Additionally, Ciccarelli participated in the 1987 IIHF World Hockey Championship in Austria, where he contributed to Canada’s fourth-place finish with four goals and six points in 10 games.
