Divya Gokulnath Biography

Divya Gokulnath is an Indian entrepreneur and educator. She is the co-founder and director of Byju’s, an educational technology company founded in 2012 in Bangalore, India. As of 2020, her family has a net worth of $3.05 billion. In 2021, Divya was featured in Fortune India’s 40 Under 40 list of the most powerful women. Furthermore, she was born and raised in Bengaluru, India.

Gokulnath had his high school education at Frank Anthony Public School. She later graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology from RV College of Engineering. She also holds a degree from The National Degree College in Jayanagar, Karnataka. Soon after Divya completed college, she wanted to continue her studies in the US, so she got admitted to Byju’s coaching classes to prepare for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

While Gokulnath waited for his result, his coach offered him the opportunity to teach students. Later, her results were announced and she was selected, but she decided to stay and continue teaching at Byju’s; how she loved teaching. In 2011, Divya and her husband co-founded Byju, an online educational app. The platform provided education to support school learning. She was chosen as a director on the “Think & Learn” application. From then on, Gokulnath was in charge of the syllabus and creating the app’s content.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Divya took charge of user experience, content and brand marketing to ensure uninterrupted learning for students. The content was made available free of charge to students during the pandemic, generating 13.5 million new users. As of April 2020, the app has a total of 50 million users and 70 million students, gaining 4.5 million subscribers. That same year, she was voted the most powerful woman in Indian business. Furthermore, Divya, her husband and her brother Riju added net worth and had $3.05 billion.

In March 2022, Gokulnath was appointed chairman of the EdTech task force of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India. In her account, she addresses issues such as fatherhood, future education and women’s participation in STEM areas. She also advocates mitigating the gender pay gap in India. Prior to this, Divya has also been featured in several articles including Forbes Asia’s Power Businesswomen and Fortune India Most Powerful Women, among others.
