Ginger Zee Biography
Ginger Renee Colonomos, known by her pseudonym Ginger Zee, is an American television personality. Zee is the chief meteorologist at ABC News. She is best known as the lead weather presenter on ABC’s Good Morning America, she has also appeared on Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers and ABC World News and Nightline.
Ginger was born in Orange and raised in California and Michigan. She graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford, Michigan, and attended Valparaiso University in Indiana. Ginger graduated with a bachelor’s degree in meteorology, fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a meteorologist, inspired by a waterspout she saw in Lake Michigan. Shortly after graduating, Zee began her career at WLAV FM/WXMI in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After that, she worked at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she was part of Storm Team 8, also covering the environment, science and the impact of weather throughout West Michigan. Before joining ABC News, she was a meteorologist at NBC station WMAQ-Channel 5 in Chicago from 2006 to 2011, also appearing on several NBC and MSNBC News programs. Additionally, Zee is the chief meteorologist at Good Morning America and weather editor at ABC News, succeeding Sam Champion who got a job at The Weather Channel. Since joining ABC News, Zee has extensively covered weather event stories and dozens of historic storms. She devastated the Jersey Shore during Hurricane Sandy, Colorado flooding and wildfires, and covered the aftermath of tornadoes in Moore and El Reno, Oklahoma. In 2016, Zee covered Hurricane Matthew and its path along the East Coast.
In addition to hosting, Ginger also appeared on an episode of Celebrity Jeopardy! against Bellamy Young, who won, and Josh Gad. She also participated in the 22nd season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, where she was paired with professional dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy. The couple finished in third place, behind Paige VanZandt in second and Nyle DiMarco in first. Furthermore, Zee is also a producer and actress, known for acting in films such as Younger (2015), Famous in Love (2017) and Miles from Tomorrowland (2015).
