James David “JD” Greear is an American religious leader who is currently pastor of The Summit Church in Durham, North Carolina. From 2018 to 2021, he served as the 62nd president of the Southern Baptist Convention. Greer became pastor of The Summit Church in 2002. He was on the staff of the International Mission Board.
JD became the 62nd president of the Southern Baptist Convention in 2018 and, in an uncontested election in 2019, was re-elected by acclamation to a second one-year term. Additionally, when the SBC 2020 annual conference was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and no replacement could be elected, his term was extended for a third year.
Greear has endeavored to minister to both victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse in the local church where he serves as a pastor. Baptist churches, he believes, should be focused on the gospel message of Jesus rather than national political goals.
Regarding her education, Greear obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Campbell University after graduating Word of Life Bible Institute.
