Biography of Joe Keery
Joe Keery is an American actor and musician famous for his role as Steven Harrington on Stranger Things (2016-present). He is also known for his role in Free Guy (2021) where he played Walter “Keyes” McKeyes. As a musician, he releases music under the stage name Djo. Furthermore, Keery is a former member of psychedelic rock band Post Animal.
Raised in Newburyport, he attended River Valley Charter School and later Newburyport High School. As a young man, he attended Theater in the Open, a performing arts camp in Maudslay State Park. However, he started acting in high school. He later went on to study at DePaul University’s School of Theater, graduating in 2014 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting.
After graduating, he auditioned over 100 before his breakout role in Stranger Things in 2016. Prior to his role in Stranger Things, he had roles in Empire and Chicago Fire. In August 2022, he was cast as Gator Tillman in Season 5 of Fargo.
As a musician, he goes by the stage name of Djo. In his early 20s, he released music under the name “Cool Cool Cool”. He was guitarist and drummer for the Chicago psychological rock band Post Animal. They released their first album in October 2015. Their second album When I Think Of You In A Castle was released in April 2018.
On July 19, 2019, under the name Djo, Keery released his first single “Roddy”. He released a second single on August 9, 2019 titled “Chateau (Feel Alright)”. Recently, in 2022, he participated in a summer music festival tour and his album Decide was announced in June 2022, along with the release of his first single “Change”.
