Middletown native Joey Logano is a noted stock car racing driver who competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, driving the No. 22 Ford Mustang for Team Penske. In addition, he competes part-time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, driving the No. 54 Ford F-150 for David Gilliland Racing.
The race car driver has now become the talk of the town after winning the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series Championship title. Logano claimed the trophy after 312 laps at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. The win gives Logano his second career championship.
The first title came in 2018 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Las Vegas. Logano started Sunday on the pole in the No. 22 Team Penske Ford. Although 36 drivers started, only four, including Ross Chastain, Chase Elliott, Christopher Bell and Logano, were eligible for the series title after a tiebreaker narrowed the field to 16.
Chastain finished 3rd, Bell 10th and Elliott 28th. Without question, Logano and his team were the best all day in Phoenix. The 32-year-old led 188 of the 312 laps in the race. Not only that, but it was the top contender for the title on all but one of the green-flag laps of the race.
Plus, Joey’s victory means the line of Cup Series title winners who win the final race of the season continues. The driver who has won the Cup Series title has also prevailed in the race each season in NASCAR’s final winner-takes-all form. As previously stated, this is the second time Logano has won the NASCAR Cup Series title. So let’s take a look at his first win.
