Julie Nelson is an American journalist who currently works as an anchor and reporter at KARE Channel 11 (NBC affiliate) in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota metropolitan area. She began working at KARE-TV in September 2003. Nelson currently anchors the 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. newscasts at the station.
Prior to joining her current station, she worked as an anchor for the 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. newscasts at KSTP Channel 5 (an ABC affiliate). Months after arriving at KSTP, Nelson was named “Best Newcomer” by Mpls. St. Paul Magazine.
A year later, the magazine named her one of the area’s “100 People to Watch.” She also won a regional Emmy for anchoring, a Regional Murrow Award, and City Pages’ “Best TV Newscaster.”
Nelson grew up in Wisconsin, where she graduated with honors from Eau Claire’s Memorial HS. She then received her bachelor’s degree in Journalism and History from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1994.
When off duty, she volunteers with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Treehouse, Christian Recovery Center, and Feed My Starving Children, among others. She also served on the Indiana University School of Journalism Alumni Board from 2002 to 2005.
