Kandi Burruss is a popular American singer, television personality, songwriter, actress and businesswoman. Her fame came in 1992 as a member of the American female vocal group Xscape.
Additionally, in 2000, Burruss won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for his contributions to the composition of the TLC hit “No Scrubs”. She has also starred in the reality show Bravo, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, since the season two premiere on July 30, 2009.
As of 2020, Burruss has starred in five Real Housewives spin-off and companion series, starting with 2012’s The Kandi Factory. Prior to joining Xscape, LaTocha Scott was performing with the group Precise. She went to the Tri-Cities Performing Arts at East Point High School in Atlanta, Georgia, LaTocha’s sister Tamika met Kandi Burruss. The three began singing together and recruited a fourth member, Tamera Coggins, however her time with the group was short-lived. After a while, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle was asked to audition for the girls, and Xscape was officially formed.
After the group’s big debut at BET’s Teen Summit in 1992, the girls were introduced to record executive Ian Burke, becoming the group’s manager. Xscape soon caught the attention of Jermaine Dupri, who later signed the group to his So So Def Recordings label.
Furthermore, on October 12, 1993, the group released their debut album Hummin’ Comin’ no ‘Cha. The album peaked at number seventeen on the US Billboard 200 and number three on the Top R&B Albums chart. It was a major critical and commercial success, certified platinum within a year and released two top ten singles.

Following the success of the album, in 1995 the group released their second studio album, Off the Hook. The album eventually went platinum. Her third and final studio album, Traces of My Lipstick, peaked at number twenty-eight on the Billboard 200 and number six on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart; over one million copies were sold in the United States. After the third album, LaTocha Scott ended up leaving the group to pursue a solo career. Soon, the girls regrouped and appeared on the soundtracks to Big Momma’s House and Hardball, before finally going on another hiatus until 2005.
Also, in 2017, TV One planned to produce an unauthorized movie about Xscape that Kandi Burruss didn’t want to happen against her and the group’s legacy. She called other members of the group to discuss and started a show of her own. The show was known as Xscape: Still Kickin’ It, and was set as a 4-episode miniseries. On November 5, 2017, the show was launched and aired on BravoTV. Finally, Burruss returned to the group.

After the split from Xscape, Burruss majored in production and songwriting. In 1999, she teamed up with group member Tameka “Tiny” Cottle to score the international hit “No Scrubs” for TLC. Also, in the same year, Burruss wrote another song, “Bills, Bills, Bills” for Destiny’s Child. Burruss would also work with Pink in co-writing her debut single “There You Go”.
Kandi was the first African-American woman to win the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers’ Songwriter of the Year award in 2000. The award, in the Rhythm & Soul category, was given for her songwriting credits, such as “No Scrubs.” and “Bills, Bills, Bills” by Destiny’s Child.
Likewise, in 2000, Burruss released his debut album called “Hey Kandi…” with well-known singles including “Don’t Think I’m Not”. The album did not do so well on the charts, as the single peaked at number 72 on the US Billboard 200.
She went ahead and rewrote and produced the song “Tardy for the Party” for her Real Housewives of Atlanta co-star Kim Zolciak.
Furthermore, on October 29, 2009, Burruss released his debut EP Fly Above. In December 2009, Kandi announced that he had signed a deal with Asylum Records after his deal with Capitol Records failed. Her second album Kandi Koated was released in December 2010. Additionally, Burruss teamed up with Atlanta rapper Rasheeda to form the duo Peach Candy.
