Kelvin Harrison Jr. is an award-winning American actor who gained fame for his roles in Ender’s Game and 12 Years a Slave. He also gained more fame for playing other roles in The High Note (2020), The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), It Comes at Night (2017), Elvis (2022) and Cyrano (2021). Harrison has received a Screen Actors Guild Award and several British Academy Film Award nominations.
Harrison was born and raised in a small African-American suburb situated in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in the Garden District but moved to The Westbank where he studied engineering and marketing immediately before moving to Los Angeles, California with his family.
Harrison then attended and graduated from the Isidore Newman School, where he struggled as one of two African-American students attending there, but managed to earn good grades. Kelvin then graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University New Orleans but transferred to the University of New Orleans.
Harrison made his official acting debut starring in the film adaptation of a 1985 novel called Ender’s Game alongside Viola Davis, Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley. He then landed another major acting role, appearing as a guest character in an episode of WGN America’s Underground and the remake of Roots.
Harrison then landed his first major small role in 12 Years a Slave, which became his breakout role as an upcoming actor. He went on to appear in other projects like Netflix’s Dee Ree’s Mudbound and a psychological thriller called It Comes at Night (2017). Harrison’s most recent film and TV projects are The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), The Photograph (2020) and The Wolf Hour (2019).
