Kevin Bacon’s path to the arts began at the age of 16 when he received a full scholarship to attend the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts at Bucknell University in 1975. It was an experience that cemented his passion for the arts.
After his time at Bucknell University, the young actor left home at the age of 17 to pursue a theater career in New York. He appeared in a production of Circle in the Square, a theater school in New York. Although he found work and made his film debut in 1978 in the fraternity comedy National Lampoon’s Animal House, this did not lead to the fame he desired. Kevin Bacon had to return to waiting tables and audition for small theater roles.
In the early ’80s, the success and fame he aspired to began to dribble in. In 1980 he had a prominent role in the film Friday the 13th, and combined this with his early-stage work such as Getting Out, performed at New York’s Phoenix Theater and Flux at Second Stage Theatre, he began to attract the attention of critics. He won an Obie Prize for his role in Forty Deuce in 1982, and not long after that, he made his Broadway debut in Slab Boys with Sean Penn and Val Kilmer. However, it was his appearance in Diner, a Barry Levinson film in which he played Timothy Fenwick, which cemented his place in the hearts of film critics and moviegoers.
As a result of the reception of his work in Diner, he was cast for the box office success Footloose. It was a role that Kevin Bacon had to enroll in high school to prepare for. Unfortunately, the success of the film and his performance led to him being typecast.
However, he managed to shake off his typecasting phase by taking on roles that demonstrated his acting abilities: from a medical student experimenting with death in “Flatliners” to a sexist in “He Said, She Said”. He played a gay prostitute in Oliver Stone’s JFK and then a prosecutor in A Few Good Men.
He starred in The River Wild alongside Meryl Streep and received a Golden Globe for his performance. Kevin Bacon has also appeared in several critically acclaimed projects for which he has received awards.
In 1996, however, he made his debut as a director in the film Losing Chase, which was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards and won one.
Outside the film business, he and his brother Michael Bacon formed a band called The Bacon Brothers. The band has released six albums.
