Laura Brown biography
Laura Brown is an Australian fashion journalist who was Editor-in-Chief of InStyle magazine and former Special Features/Projects and Executive Director of Harper’s Bazaar magazine. She is well educated and graduated from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Arts and Communications.
She was born and raised in Australia as an only child. Laura spent her early childhood years in Camden and later moved with her mother to Manly after her mother divorced her father. After a while, Laura and her mother moved to North Sydney and she attended Willoughby Girls High School. It was after attending this school that she joined Charles Sturt University.
She then made her career debut at the defunct Australian fashion magazine Mode, where she was production editor for two years. At the age of 21, she moved to London for two years, where she worked as a freelancer. She even worked as a correspondent for Harper’s Bazaar Australia. While freelancing in London, she paid her own way to Paris, where she snuck into fashion shows without credentials.
Laura then returned to Australia, where she was hired by Harper’s Bazaar Australia as a features editor. She credits editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey as her mentor for her stay at Harper’s Bazaar. For her first InStyle cover, she used model Emily Ratajkoski, who first appeared in 2013 in the music video for Robin Thicke’s song “Blurred Lines”.
As of 2022, she hosts a bi-weekly video series called “Dirty Laundry”. In the series, she interviews celebrities at a laundromat and each video reveals personal stories behind her most beloved clothes and accessories. On December 1, 2020, she debuted the InStyle podcast “Ladies First with Laura Brown” where she speaks with trailblazers about historic “firsts” in the industry.
