Biography of Mark Giangreco
Mark Giangreco is a renowned former American sports director and sports anchor for WLS-TV in Chicago, Illinois. He anchored the sports segment on ABC 7 News during the 5pm and 10pm newscasts through 2021. Mark is currently a contributor to ESPN Radio.
Giangreco attended Canisius High School and graduated in 1970. He later joined the University of Dayton, Ohio, where he began his broadcasting career at WING Radio and graduated with a degree in Communications in 1974.
Mark’s first television job was at a local NBC station in Dayton, Ohio. She served the station for less than a year and moved to Louisville, Kentucky. After her four-year stay in Louisville, Kentucky, Mark moved to Chicago to work at WMAQ-TV between 1982 and 1994, when she joined ABC 7 in Chicago.
In addition to anchoring the sports segment on the weekly news, Giangreco hosted ABC7’s New Year’s Eve special “Countdown Chicago” alongside Janet Davies.
Mark has been off the air since January, when he joked that anchor Cheryl Burton could play a “stupid, combative interior decorator” on a reality show. Cheryl filed a complaint with management, leading to Giangreco’s suspension and ultimately the exit deal with the station owned by Walt Disney Co., the Tribune confirmed Friday. Terms of the separation were not disclosed.
