Michael Wooten is an Emmy and Murrow Award-winning American journalist, currently serving as anchor and editor-in-chief at WGRZ 2 On Your Side in Buffalo, NY, specializing in in-depth investigative reporting.
Wooten comes from a small town in West Virginia. For his education he went to marshall university (Go Herd!) on the prestigious Yeager Scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with honors, receiving a degree in Broadcast Journalism. In addition, she also studied at Oxford University in England and in Antonio de Nebrija University in Madrid, Spain.
He started his journalist career at NBC affiliate WSAZ-TV, where he worked as a producer and later became a reporter and weekend anchor. Michael’s most unforgettable story in his hometown was sitting with then-Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton on the same day. He was the station’s political reporter, then interviewed dozens of national politicians during the 2008 primary and general election campaigns.
Wooten moved to Buffalo shortly before the 2009 crash of Continental Flight 3407, the first story he covered in western New York. In the years that followed, he had the chance to recount the families’ various trips to Washington DC as they fought for stricter air regulations to prevent another disaster.
Likewise, Wooten has chronicled some of the country’s top stories over the past decade. In July 2012, he covered the Aurora, Colorado movie theater murders. Wooten also did a lot of live reporting for sister stations across the country. Additionally, he reported from Little Rock, Arkansas, following a hurricane; from Chardon, Ohio, after the school shooting; Washington, DC during “Snowmageddon”; the Denver area for 2013 floods; and also from Houston in 2017 by the effects of Hurricane Harvey.

Wooten received a Emmy Award for his report on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in the state of New York. Furthermore, he was named for several other Emmy awards and has won several Associated Press awards, including one for Best Continuing Coverage and two for Best Corporate Reporting. Furthermore, in 2015, WGRZ won an Edward R. Murrow regional award for Wooten’s investigative reporting in “Cell Phone Spying” at the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. In 2018, your work contributed to another rEdward R. Murrow regional award for innovation.
