Pat Harvey is a well-known American journalist who, since 1989, has worked as an anchor at KCAL 9 in Los Angeles. Harvey also began docking for KCAL’s sister station KCBS at 5pm and 11pm in 2010.

Harvey participated Cass Technical School and the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan. Pat is the longest-serving primetime anchor on a Los Angeles television station. The City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared October 30, 2009, Pat Harvey Day in honor of his 20th birthday.

Harvey also won the Governor’s Award for the Los Angeles Area Emmys in June 2015. Pat was recognized in the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C.’s Newseum in 2012.

Harvey traveled extensively for KCAL-TV 9 and its sister station, KCBS-T, in addition to his anchor duties. She reported on the Papal Conclave in Rome, the first all-racial elections in South Africa, the civil conflict in El Salvador and the AIDS epidemic in East Africa and Russia.

Pat was the first journalist to interview the jury dismissed Jeanette Harris during the OJ Simpson trial. The report aired on television stations across the country and was broadcast internationally.

Harvey won 25 local Emmys, one National Emmyand the Joseph M. Quinn Lifetime of the LA Press Club Achievement Award in 2004. The Associated Press named her “Best news anchor.”

Harvey was also honored by the Los Angeles branch of American Women in Radio and Television with the Genii Award in 2008. The National Association of Black Journalists also honored her.

Before moving to Los Angeles, Harvey worked at WGN Superstation in Chicago. His investigations into bad Pap smears, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of women, led to legislation in Illinois regulating cytology labs and the closing of one in Southern California.

Harvey was also an original anchor for CNN Headline News, starting the fledgling network in 1982 and then anchoring CNN’s morning news program until 1985, where he interviewed Ferdinand Marcos after the Philippines’ historic democratic elections.

Harvey is a Detroit native and his first reporting role was at WNEM-TV, an NBC station in Saginaw, Michigan. She was invited to carry the Olympic torch by downtown Los Angeles in 2002 because of her popularity and community work, and she received two honorary doctorates in the humanities. Only two black night anchors had previously worked in Los Angeles: Ken Jones in the early to mid-1970s and Felicia Jeter from 1980 to 1981.

Pat became a pioneer as a result of her excellent work. Christine Devine, Marc Brown and Michaela Pereira, among the top anchors of the week/night in Los Angeles, owe their careers to her.
