Peter FitzSimons Biography

Peter John Allen FitzSimons is an Australian author, journalist, and radio and television presenter. He is a former national representative rugby union player and was the chair of the Australian Republic Movement from 2015 to 2022. As a journalist, Peter worked with The Sydney Morning Herald and Sun-Herald.

FitzSimons was born in Sydney and grew up in Peats Ridge, on the Central Coast of New South Wales. He attended Peats Ridge Public School and Knox Grammar School before going to Findlay High School in Ohio. He then furthered his studies at Sydney University where he graduated with a degree in Arts. While at University he was a member of the football Club under coach Alan Jones. He also played with CA Brive in France for four seasons as the club’s first foreign player.

From 1989 to 1990, Peter played seven test matches at lock for the Australian national rugby union team. He joined The Sydney Morning Herald in 1988 as a writer. Moreover, FitzSimons was also a sports columnist for that publication since 1987. While there, he wrote a column titled “The Fitz Files” which looks at all the happenings over the past seven days in sports. Peter also appeared as a regular guest on the Australian Foxtel program The Back Page, formerly hosted by rugby league journalist Mike Gibson and now Tony Squires.

Prior, FitzSimons started co-hosting a breakfast radio program with Mike Carlton on Sydney radio station 2UE in 2006. Although, the Mike and Fitz Breakfast Show still trailed a long way behind the number one program on 2GB, hosted by FitzSimons’ former coach Alan Jones. After two years, he quit to become a stay-at-home dad and focus on his writing. Aside from that, Peter was also a contributor to community organizations. While at University he was a member of the Senate as well as Pro-Chancellor.

Additionally, he served on the council of the Australian War Memorial and founded the Cauliflower Club with Nick Farr-Jones. FitzSimon is the author of over twenty-seven books, including Tobruk, Kokoda, Batavia, Eureka, Ned Kelly, Gallipoli, and biographies of Douglas Mawson, Nancy Wake‚ Kim Beazley‚ Nick Farr-Jones‚ Les Darcy, Steve Waugh and John Eales, and is one of Australia’s biggest selling non-fiction authors of the last fifteen years.

Furthermore, Peter has been entitled Member of the Order of Australia for service to literature as a biographer, sports journalist, and commentator, and to the community through contributions to conservation, disability care, social welfare, and sporting organizations.
