Phil Black is an Australian freelance reporter and correspondent for CNN International based in CNN’s London office. He joined CNN in April 2007, covering stories across Europe. In 2008, Phil was part of the CNN team covering the Russian-Georgian conflict, which erupted in breakaway South Ossetia.
Previously, he was a reporter for Seven News in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He joined Seven News as a senior producer in 2000 and then moved on to the reporting team. Some of the stories he has covered include the CityRail crisis, the Redfern riots, the 2002 Christmas wildfires, and the Sarah, Duchess of York access scandal in May 2010. One of his notable stories was in December. 2004, where he reported from Sri Lanka after the Boxing Day tsunami.
He received an Associate Degree in Journalism from Macleay College in Sydney. After graduation, Phil began his career on Australia’s Channel Nine’s ‘Gateway’ show as a researcher. He was on the channel for five years as a producer and then as a reporter.
Black is an international correspondent for CNN based at the station’s London Bureau. Before moving to London, Phil was a Moscow-based correspondent for CNN International in Russia. He recounted a number of high-profile stories from the region, including Vladimir Putin’s landslide re-election as president and the controversial arrest and detention of the punk protest group Pussy Riot.
He joined CNN International in April 2007 as a freelance reporter. Since then, he has worked on various stories, such as the Finnish classroom shootings, the McCartney-Mills divorce hearings, the attempted terrorist attacks in London, the search for Madeleine McCann and the Princess Diana inquiry.
