Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur, investor, programmer, and blogger who is currently the CEO of OpenAI and formerly President of Y Combinator.
Altman grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States. He got his first computer at the age of eight. Sam received his high school education from the John Burroughs School and went to Stanford University to study computer science until 2005, when he dropped out. He also received an honorary degree from University of Waterloo in 2017.
Sam co-founded Loopt, a location-based social networking mobile app, in 2005 and became its CEO. Loopt closed in 2012 after failing to gain traction after raising more than $30 million in venture financing, and was purchased by Green Dot Corporation for $43.4 million.
Sam joined Y Combinator as a part-time partner in 2011, and Paul Graham, the company’s founder, elected him president in February 2014. Loopt was included in its initial investment round.
