Born in Virginia, Smith learned the craft of shining from his father. As a boy, he helped his father operate a still and witnessed the police raid on the distillery at the age of 5. Despite this, he took over the family business after his father passed away.
Smith gave illegal brilliance to the Virginia Wilderness with his dogs watching over the authorities. After years of working behind the scenes, he had a license to produce and distribute Moonlight.
