Travers Mackel biography
Travers Mackel is a well-known American journalist who currently hosts the 4 pm and 5 pm news on WDSU Monday through Friday. It also features WDSU’s ‘Hot Seat’ segment on Sunday nights at 10:30pm. Mackel has been a mainstay of WDSU since 2003, and has been a part of all the top news in the field for over ten years. Travers expresses his admiration for what he does.
Mackel spent more than three years reporting for WLBT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi, before joining WDSU. He served as an anchor and reporter for KTVE-TV in Monroe, Louisiana, and as an anchor and reporter for KTVE-TV in Monroe, Louisiana.
Travers earned his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. He was a member of the Loyola baseball team as a shortstop in college. Mackel has extensive experience reporting high-profile public corruption cases as well as criminal prosecutions. He served as the station’s point man for former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin’s federal corruption trial, and he was the only television reporter to get an interview with him since he was charged, convicted, and imprisoned.
Likewise, Travers covered the federal corruption case against former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard, as well as the murder trial of the guy convicted of shooting and killing former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith. In 2009, Mackel spent a few weeks in Washington, DC, covering the bribery trial of former Louisiana congressman William Jefferson.
Furthermore, his reporting took him all over the world. Travers was a member of the Hearst Television team assigned to cover the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2018 PyeongChang Games. Travers appeared as himself on an episode of HBO’s “Treme,” which was filmed in New Orleans, and as a reporter on “This Is The End,” which was also filmed in New Orleans.

In the summer of 2005, Mackel covered Hurricane Katrina, which was the most important story of his career. He was one of the few journalists who managed to stay at the Louisiana Superdome during the storm and provide live eyewitness reports when parts of the roof were ripped off.
He was also on a police boat, telling spectators the story of the rescue operations in New Orleans hours after the levees broke and much of the city was flooded. In the weeks following the storm, Mackel provided much of the station’s 24-hour coverage and was included in the documentary “Seven Days That Changed New Orleans.”
