The American businessman Rick Harrison is among other things a reality TV star, author, and co-founder of the world-famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, which he founded with his father in 1989. After the massive success, the business has enjoyed, it is not only featured in the history series Pawn Stars, it has also broken records and became History Channel’s highest-rated show in 2011.

Harrison is one of those who decided from an early age that school wasn’t their forte, so he dropped out of high school in tenth grade to pursue his “$2,000 a week business of selling fake Gucci bags”. Apparently, that move paid off, as he’s reached milestones since then.

Let’s take a little trip back in time and remember how the mogul we know today began.

Background Information

On 22 March 1965, the renowned businessman was born Richard Kevin “Rick” Harrison in Davidson, North Carolina. Like most children, he could not enjoy a normal childhood, as he had epileptic seizures that began at the age of eight. As a result, he was confined to bed most of the time, but the positive thing was that he became an avid reader of a series of books by John D. Fitzgerald entitled The Great Brain. The ten-year-old con man from Utah named Tom D. Fitzgerald, the main character in the book, played an important role in influencing Harrison’s future efforts. It is remarkable that the character is able to make money-making plans.

Rick Harrison left Taft Middle School, part of the San Diego Unified School District. His family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in April 1981 as a result of the crumbling state of the family’s real estate business. In 1989, Harrison and his father pioneered the gold & silver pawn shop, and a few years later the duo lent out approximately $3 million annually, generating approximately $700,000 in interest income.

Harrison also has a reputation as a Las Vegas pawnbroker, where he collects special sporting goods, including a 2001 New England Patriots Super Bowl ring from American football cornerback Brock Williams. He was awarded the National Pawnbrokers Association’s Pawnbroker of the Year Award for bringing the pawn industry closer to the people.

Rick Harrison made several attempts to make a television show about a pawnbroker, without success. This happened after his shop was featured in the 2003 show Insomniac with Dave Attell. Nevertheless, Brent Montgomery and Colby Gaines of Leftfield Pictures approached him with an idea: they wanted to launch a reality show that would be done in a pawn shop in Las Vegas, and Harrison’s was the best option.

The Show – Pawn Stars features Harrison and his father, who is referred to in the show as “The Old Man”. Also featured are Harrison’s son Corey and Corey’s childhood friend Austin “Chumlee” Russell, who is also his employee. Pawn Stars was later to become the highest-rated show on the History Channel. Rick Harrison also appeared on other shows such as I Lost My Head in Vegas, iCarly, The Safe, and The Middle.

To date, his net worth is estimated at $8 million, which comes largely from his salary of $300,000 per season from Pawn Stars.
