Sia is an Australian-born singer/songwriter, music video director, and record producer who owes her name a number of awards and a large fan base. In the mid-1990s, she began her singing career with a local jazz band in her native town, the acid jazz band Crisp, and when the jazz band disbanded, she released her first studio album OnlySee, before moving to London in 1997 to further fuel her dreams.

But don’t think that her rise was spontaneous, because the famous singer, like many music artists, had a very humble beginning and had her own share of pain and struggles on her way to success. She attempted suicide, struggled with depression, struggled with alcohol/drug addiction, and she still stands upright and is proud to be one of the artists with the highest record sales ever. She is a recipient of the ARIA Awards and the MTV Video Music Award. Read more about her below

She is a niece of actor and singer Kevin Colson and a cousin of Australian Christian rock singer Peter Furler. Sia loved music from an early age, and since her father was a musician, it was almost natural that she did too. She remembered that as a child she imitated the performance styles of Stevie Wonder, Sting, and Aretha Franklin. She describes these singers as her “early influencers”.

Sia Music Career

She began her career in the mid-1990s as a singer in the local Australian acid jazz band Crisp. Sia contributed vocals to the band’s two EPs: Word and Deal and the Deal and Delirium, released in 1996 and 1997 respectively.

After the band split up in 1997, Sia released her first studio album, OnlySee, on Flavoured Records. The album didn’t sell very well as only about 1,200 copies were sold. After this time she moved to London in pursuit of her career.

In London, she started with the British band Jamiroquai as a background singer before moving to another band group Zero 7 as a singer. She contributed vocals to their first three albums and also toured with them. In 2000 Sia released her first single – Taken for Granted under the sub-label Dance Pool of Sony Music. The single did quite well when it climbed to number 10 in the British single charts.

The following year (2001) she released her second solo album entitled “Healing Is Difficult”. The album was a mixture of retro jazz and soul music, and its lyrics were about how she dealt with the death of her first love affair. The album didn’t go quite as well, and Sia fired her manager out of anger, left Sony Music, and signed with a subsidiary of Universal Music Group (UMG), Go! Beat. She received her first award in 2002 when she won the APRA Awards in the “Breakthrough Songwriter” category together with Jennifer Waite and Grant Wallis from Brisbane pop duo Aniki’s Jennifer Waite and Grant Wallis.

Their third solo album, Colour the Small One, was released in 2004. The singles from the albums “Don’t Bring Me Down”, “Breathe Me”, “Where I Belong” and “Numb” became huge hits across the country and beyond, and topped the charts in several countries. This increased their fame in the UK, France, Denmark, and even the USA.

“Where I Belong” was soon considered for the soundtrack of Spider-Man 2, but due to a problem with the record company, it was eventually dropped. Breathe Me”, however, made it into the US HBO TV series Six Feet Under and continued to make the singer famous in the US.

Sia became dissatisfied with the way the album “Colour the Small One” was marketed and how she had difficulty making contact with a mainstream audience. So she moved to New York City in 2005, and her manager David Enthoven organized a tour of the country to help her maintain her career.

In 2007 she released a live album called Lady Croissant, which was followed by a fourth studio album Some People Have Real Problems. The album soon reached number 41 in Australia and was awarded a gold star by the Australian Recording Industry Association. In the USA it reached a top 26 on the Billboard 200, making it their first album to enter the US charts.

Their fifth studio album We Are Born, released in June 2010, peaked at number 2 on the ARIA album charts and received a gold certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association. The album was a huge success, which further increased her popularity, causing her so much discomfort that she began to hide from the public.

She rejected promos, even for her tours, and began wearing a mask on stage, became increasingly addicted to drugs and alcohol, and was considered a suicide. After the dismissal of her manager Enthoven and the employment of Jonathan Daniel, who gave her the idea to write songs for other artists, she soon retired as a recording artist.

Sia began her career as a songwriter by writing “Titanium” for the singer Alicia Keys. Between 2011 and 2013 she wrote songs for various other artists such as Flo Rida, Rihanna, Beyonce, and Kylie Minogue.

She soon returned as a recording artist. In 2013 she released “Elastic Heart”, which became the soundtrack for the American film The Hunger Games: Catch Fire. In 2014, she released her sixth studio album 1000 Forms of Fear, which sold 52,000 copies in one week and climbed to number 1 on the US Billboard 200 and the Australian charts. At the beginning of the following year (2016) the album sold 1 million copies worldwide.

The album also earned Sia four nominations for Best Music Video, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year at the 2015 Grammy Awards. In the same year, she was also nominated alongside Kurstin, director Will Gluck, at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards for best original song for Annie’s original songs, “Opportunity”.

In 2017, Sia performed together with her dancers, led by Ziegler, at the closing events of the World Cup in Dubai. In the same year, she joined Atlantic Records and released the new album “Every Day Is Christmas” in November.

In 2018 she joined a joint project called LSD with the American DJ/record producer Diplo and the English musician Labrinth.

What Does She Look Like?

The Australian singer-songwriter is one of those artists who would prefer the world to simply celebrate her work without necessarily knowing her. As Sia’s fame began to grow, she started wearing masks on stage and at performances to hide her identity. Thus, at performances, she was found wearing huge wigs, bows, and all kinds of headgear to hide her face.

At other times, she did not stand in front of the audience during performances and instead had her dancers under Ziegler’s direction – just like at the 57th annual Grammy Awards 2015. She appeared on stage with an oversized platinum wig with her back to the audience, while two dancers in naked bodysuits and matching platinum wigs wound around the stage in her place.
