For clarification, the Jubilee Alliance was a coalition of Ruto’s United Republican Party and Kenyatta’s party, The National Alliance.

To the shock of most of his supporters, Ruto was named among the few people to stand trial at the International Criminal Court. This was an appeal to allegations of involvement in Kenya’s political violence from 2007-2008.

However, the case was dropped for lack of sufficient evidence to support the allegations. Who knows? Politics is a dirty game, as they say.

After their first term ended in accordance with Kenya’s Constitution, the duo went to the vote once again under the Jubilee Party ticket. In August 2017, Uhuru and Ruto were declared winners of the election after winning 54%.

However, Kenya’s Supreme Court annulled the election and new elections were held in October 2017. Ironically, the opposition boycotted the election leading to his re-election with 98% of the vote. Then they were sworn in as president and vice president for their second term. This is the term they are serving until the next election in 2022.

However, Dr. William Ruto is still eyeing the Kenyan presidential seat in the August 2022 election. He has already announced his interest in the vacancy, having already established his UDA (United Democratic Party) political party. This party is a division of the Jubilee ruling party.
