Bill Keller Biography
Bill Keller is a renowned American journalist who is famous for his work at The New York Times Paper in New York as a columnist. Keller joined The New York Times Paper in 1984 and began as the paper’s executive editor from July 2003 to September 2011, when he stepped down to be a full-time writer.
Additionally, Bill is the founding editor-in-chief of The Marshall Project, an independent non-profit newsroom that covers crime and punishment in America. He also worked at the Times Moscow bureau from 1986 to 1991, where he was bureau chief during the final years of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. For his reporting in 1988, Keller won a Pulitzer Prize.
Bill attended St. Matthews and Junípero Serra High School in San Mateo, California. In 1970, he graduated from Pomona College, where he began his journalistic career as a reporter for a campus newspaper known as The Collegian. Keller later completed the Advanced Management Program at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in July 2000.
From July 1970 to March 1979, Bill worked as a reporter in Portland with the Oregonian. He later followed up with his work on the Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report and the Dallas Times Herald.
Keller joined The New York Times in April 1984 as a domestic correspondent based in the Washington office. He then went on to serve as the Times’ Moscow correspondent from December 1986 to October 1991, his last three years as the paper’s bureau chief.

The Marshal Project is a non-profit, nonpartisan online journalism organization covering criminal justice in the United States. The project was the brainchild of former hedge fund manager, filmmaker and journalist Neil Barsky, who announced it in his byline in an unrelated New York Times article in November 2013.
