He was a midfielder. He used to play for Vélez Sarsfield. He played for the team from 1987 to 1990. And in that time he scored 14 goals in his 76 appearances alone. Diego played for Pisa for two years, from 1990 to 1992. He scored six goals in 55 games.
He also played for Sevilla from 1992 to 1994, where he scored 12 goals in 64 games. Diego played for Atlético de Madrid for three years, from 1994 to 1997, scoring 21 goals in 98 games. He has made him very successful in his career from the beginning.
