Elsa Walsh is an American author, writer and former reporter for the Washington Post and writer for The New Yorker. In 1989, Elsa was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and released her book Divided Lives: The Public and Private Struggles of 3 Accomplished Women in 1995.
Walsh is a proud graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and began her career as a journalist in 1980.
Elsa worked as a reporter for The Washington Post. In 1989, she and fellow reporter Benjamin Weiser were Pulitzer Prize finalists for their “series on how court secrecy procedures created a system of private justice within public courts,” according to the prize committee. The series investigated the role of judges in withholding important security information from the public through passing confidentiality agreements and sealing court records.
In 1995, Walsh published her book Divided Lives: The public and Private Struggles of 3 Accomplished Women, in which she interviewed three women about their “experiences of juggling marriage and career.” Participants in the book interview were 60 Minutes reporter Meredith Vieira, orchestra conductor Rachael Worby, and breast surgeon Alison Estabrook.
In addition, Elsa interviewed members of the women’s families as well as her co-workers. She later became a copywriter for The New Yorker, where she covered US politics as well as profiles of figures such as Saudi Prince Bandar, Ted Kennedy, Tipper Gore and Harry Reid.
