Biography of Laura Velasquez
Laura Velasquez is a renowned American broadcaster and award-winning AccuWeather meteorologist based in State College, Pennsylvania, where she analyzes weather patterns using her graphic media skills. Velasquez works with a skilled team of over 10 meteorologists as well as graphic artists to ensure everything weather-related is ready for the initial show.
Laura’s passion for the weather started when she was 5 years old. Even in kindergarten, Laura’s first choice in television programming was always related to the weather. She was always thrilled to see the impact the harsh weather would have.
Laura attended Jenison High School and later earned her BA in Meteorology, Mathematics, and Geographical Science from Central Michigan University (2004-2008). Later, in 2011, Laura joined Mississippi State University and graduated with a Masters in Applied Meteorology in 2015.
In addition, Velasquez has earned the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorological Society along with the Television Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association. She is also a member of both organizations.

After graduating from Central Michigan University and Mississippi State University, Velasquez began working at WOOD-TV in August 2007. After spending nearly 7 years at the station, Laura moved to Denver, Colorado, and joined KDVR/ KWGN, where he served as a meteorologist between July 2014 and August 2015. Laura then joined AccuWeather.
While in Michigan, Laura was recognized by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters earning the title of “Best Weathercast”.
Outside of her normal work routine, Laura is an avid runner and endurance athlete. Notably, Velasquez has completed four marathons and will run his fifth in Chicago in October. The Cherry Creek Trail, Wash Park and the trails in Red Rocks have become her favorites. Plus, she’s looking forward to climbing some 14-ers in the not-too-distant future and is ready to learn to ski “the right way” on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains.
