Matt Wintz is an Emmy-winning weatherman who currently works for WKYC-TV in Cleveland, Ohio as a weatherman Monday-Thursday at 5pm, 7pm and Sunday at 6pm and 11pm.
Wintz was born and raised in Jefferson, in the middle of the northeastern snow belt of Ashtabula County, Ohio. In 2006, he received his Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from The Ohio State University. He also holds a BA in Geography from Southern College of Birmingham. When he was three, Matt became interested in the weather. He spent most of his time watching the Weather Channel while the rest of the kids watched cartoons, and he claims he was looking at radar and satellites.
In addition, his enthusiasm for the weather grew with each lake-effect snow and summer storm event. He claims to have studied and observed the climate of northeast Ohio for over thirty years. He began his broadcasting career as the chief meteorologist at WYIN, a PBS affiliate in Chicago, where he worked for six years. He later worked as a chief meteorologist for three years at WLTZ, an NBC station in Columbus, Georgia. Wintz also worked as an intern for the Ohio News Network and WICU 12 News.
In the far south, Matt gained crucial experience in forecasting severe weather. He states that “During my tenure, we’ve had over 60 tornadoes in my viewing area, and I’m happy to report that none of them resulted in injuries or deaths. My primary responsibility is keeping families safe during severe storms, which we achieve by providing uninterrupted tornado coverage on TV and Facebook Live.”
Also, Matt and his family are so happy and grateful to be back in Cleveland. He declares, “This is dream stuff. At school, I used to make predictions on the blackboard for my teachers, and now the same teachers and mentors can watch my predictions on television. It’s bizarre.” He also likes to run around and have coffee at a local coffee shop in his spare time.
