He was born in Hasselt, Belgium on September 30, 1997 and has a younger sister named Victoria. His father, Jos Verstappen, is a former Formula One driver from the Netherlands, his Belgian mother, Sophie Kumpen, was involved in karting, and his first cousin is a two-time NASCAR Whelen Euro Series winner and now works as a team manager for PK Garage in the Euro Series.
He spent more time with his father than his mother due to his karting activities and grew up in Maaseik surrounded by the Dutch. He started go-karting when he was four years old.
