Maya Wiley is an American civil rights activist and former chairman of the New York Civil Claims Review Board. Currently, Wiley is Vice President of Social Justice at the New School and Henry Cohen Professor of Urban Policy and Management. She is also the Legal Analyst for MSNBC.
Maya studied at the University of Colombia and graduated from Juris Doctor. While there, she served as executive editor of Colombia’s human rights magazine and president of the black law student association. Furthermore, she volunteered at the AIDS Discrimination Law Clinic.
Additionally, Maya was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar; the recipient of the Jane Marks Murphy Award in Clinical Advocacy. She was a Paul Robeson Scholar and a Charles Evan Hughes Scholar. Maya also attended Dartmouth University and majored in psychology.
Maya previously worked for the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Education Fund. Afterwards, she worked at the American Civil Liberties Union as well as the Open Society Institute. Wiley founded and served as president of the Center for Social Inclusion. It is a national political strategy organization that aims to reduce structural racism.
Additionally, Wiley is Vice President of Social Justice at The New School. She was appointed Henry Cohen Professor of Public and Urban Policy at the School of Policy, Management and Environment at New School Milano.
