Biography of Thomas Girardi

Thomas Girardi is an American former attorney, television personality, and co-founder of Girardi & Keese, a law firm in downtown Los Angeles. Girardi is widely regarded as one of America’s most prominent trial lawyers, having spent more than four decades in that career.

Thomas attended and graduated from Loyola High School in Los Angeles in 1957. He graduated in Loyola Marymount University with a BA in 1961, a JD from Loyola Law School in 1964, and an LL.M. from New York University in 1965.

Thomas Girardi’s Career

In 1965, Thomas began practicing law and co-founded a firm with his friend Robert M. Keese. In 1970, he became the first California attorney to win a medical malpractice lawsuit worth more than $1 billion. He also won a $785 million personal injury verdict for toxic damages caused by workers at Lockheed’s Skunkworks facility, as well as a $45.5 million verdict against Ford Motor Company for a defective seat belt that paralyzed a six-year-old child.

Girardi has secured significant settlements for his clients against pharmaceutical giant Merck for personal injuries suffered by Vioxx users ($4.85 billion). He has also secured settlements of $1.9 billion and $1.7 billion for Californians who were defrauded by natural gas price manipulation.

Girardi was one of the most prominent attorneys in the dispute against the utility company Pacific Gas & Electric. Residents of Hinkley, a desert town, accused the corporation of poisoning their water supply due to a leak at the gas pumping station. As a result, Pacific Gas & Electric agreed to pay $333 million to the town’s 650 residents.

However, one of his most glaring failures in his career came when he tried to enforce a $489 million judgment for default by a Nicaraguan court against Dole Food and Shell Chemicals in U.S. courts. They say the pesticide Dibromochloropropane, or DBCP, had devastating effects on workers who were exposed to it, and they successfully sued the companies in Nicaragua.

U.S. courts, on the other hand, found that Girardi and his team’s submission of translated documents from Nicaraguan court proceedings was flawed in key areas. Girardi & Keese was fined for breaching its duty of candor to the courts, and he and his team had to pay fines.
