Melissa Nord biography
Melissa Nord is an Emmy Award-winning certified broadcast meteorologist for 11 Alive, WXIA Weekend Morning News based in Atlanta. Nord is a native of the Atlanta area, a proud Georgia Tech graduate, and she’s thrilled to be back home anticipating the weather for North Georgia.
Melissa graduated from Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. During her internship at the National Weather Service Office, she worked on a collaborative research study to explore ways to increase alert times during severe tornado weather events. She was named one of Georgia Tech Alumni Association’s 40 Under 40 Graduates in 2021.

Nord has covered national and international weather stories and most recently worked for The Weather Channel and CNN on a part-time basis. In this one, it covered the Atlantic Basin’s most active hurricane season on record and the Northeast’s biggest snowstorm in nearly five years.
Before returning home, Melissa spent nearly four years in Washington, D.C. on 11Alive’s sister station, WUSA 9, where she developed her skills in explaining the weather using augmented reality graphics. She won the 2018 Associated Press and Emmy Awards for Outstanding Meteorologist in the DC-Baltimore Area.
Prior to Washington DC, Nord worked as a meteorologist at LEX 18 in Lexington, Kentucky. She began her broadcasting career in Atlanta as a weather producer and graphic meteorologist for The Weather Channel. Additionally, she volunteered at the National Weather Service Office in Peachtree City, during which time she worked on a collaborative research study to explore ways to increase notice periods during severe tornado weather events.
Melissa is an advocate of inspiring others to take an interest in science and is looking forward to community events and school visits across North Georgia aimed at promoting STEM education. Nord currently serves on the Children’s Museum of Atlanta Exhibition and Programming Committee.
