She was canal surfing after arriving in Long Beach, California, and landed at the 1978 French Open, where she witnessed Virginia Ruzici of Poland win the women’s singles competition in the end. He was not very interested in tennis; what caught his eye was Ruzici’s $40,000 first-place prize, which equates to about $170,000 in today’s money. Serena turned pro the following year.
At the 1998 Australian Open, the sisters notably met in their first major professional match. Serena was 16 and Venus was 17. Venus won in straight sets. Serena Williams won the US Open at the age of 18 in 1999.
Venus won Wimbledon at the age of 20 in 2000. When Venus won Wimbledon, he was heard exclaiming from the crowd, “Straight out of Compton!” a reference to a song by rap group NWA based in Compton, the same area of Los Angeles where the family once resided.
His daughters, Venus and Serena Williams then dominated the professional women’s tennis circuit for many years, regularly winning major events. She was her trainer for much of the late 1990s and early 2000s, however they have since moved on to having new trainers. She can now often be seen cheering them on from the stands.
He had a stroke in July 2016. His wife at the time, Lakeisha Williams, stated that his condition was stable. However, he had several strokes after that.
