Sam Champion biography
Sam Champion is an American meteorologist best known for his combined 25-year career on ABC’s flagship station WABC-TV and Good Morning America. Previously, Sam co-anchored America’s Morning Headquarters, a 4-hour, 23.5 Degrees With Sam Champion morning show on The Weather Channel.
Sam studied at Fairfax College in Fairfax, Virginia, later graduating in 1979. He then joined Eastern University of Kentucky for a bachelor’s degree in broadcast news. Furthermore, he interned at WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky.
Champion started working at WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky. Before long, he moved to WJKS (now WCWJ) in Jacksonville, Florida. Beginning in 1988, he became a meteorologist for WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News in New York.
However, he was dropped from the station to direct Good Morning American on a salary of $1.5 million a year. On April 7, 2008, Sam began presenting Sea Rescue, an educational and informational program at Litton’s Weekend Adventure that focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating and, in many cases, releasing animals back into the wild.
During his tenure as a weather anchor for Good Morning America, Sam worked as a weather editor. He also built ABC News’ Climate, Weather and Environment Unit, oversaw all climate, weather and environmental coverage across all ABC platforms.
Later, in 2012, Sam became the editor-in-chief of the Weather Channel, creating and hosting AMHQ, a 4-hour morning show, and 23.5, a climate and science talk show.
In her successful weather career, Sam received a Peabody Award for her “Sandy Coverage” as well as winning four Emmys.
