Biography of the Storm Field

Elliott David Field (Storm Field) is a retired American television meteorologist best known for his work in the New York media market. He entered the industry after his father, Dr. Frank Field, a longtime New York meteorologist.

Storm made her first excursion into weather forecasting while working for WABC’s Eyewitness News. He was hired by the network in March 1976, and his first television appearance was while covering Hurricane Belle. He then worked when Tex Antoine was sick. Field was responsible for the weekend weather broadcasts as well as the weekday weather program at 11pm.

He took over as permanent meteorologist on November 29, 1976, replacing the suspended Antoine, who had been fired five days earlier for making an inappropriate comment about a rape story.

Field was in charge of the 6 pm and 11 pm news, with several meteorologists (such as Ira Joe Fisher and Sam Champion) appearing on the 5 pm news. He joined the WPLJ morning team in New York in 1978, alongside Jimmy Fink and Shelli Sonstein.

Field, along with Tracy Egan and (later) Kaity Tong, became the host of the newly formed 5 PM Eyewitness News show in 1981 in addition to his weather duties. He would continue to do so until 1983, when Tom Snyder took over the news and intermittently subtitled in 1984. In 1991, he left WABC entirely and was replaced on the 6pm and 11pm broadcasts by Sam Champion.

Field returned to his father, Dr. Frank Field, on WCBS on August 24, 1992, after a break. This was the first time the two worked together. Prior to its debut, WCBS filmed a series of commercials featuring Storm and Frank Field, employing puns on their names.

Field remained at WCBS until 1997, succeeding Irv “Mr. G” Gikofsky as chief meteorologist and then transferred to the station’s morning news at the end of his term.

Storm’s third and final meteorological job took him to the WWOR in 1997, where he worked as the station’s chief meteorologist and reported on the station’s 10 p.m. program. During his time at WWOR, he got a second chance to work with his father when Dr. Frank Field was hired as a weekend weatherman before retiring in the early 2000s.

Field was fired by the WWOR in 2007 after ten years due to budget cuts at both the WWOR and sister station WNYW and was replaced by Audrey Puente, a former WCBS meteorist. He left the company soon after.
