Tony Geftos Biography
Tony Geftos is an American Emmy-winning journalist and former president of the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors who currently serves as a weekend anchor on 13ABC since 2000. He was most recently recognized by the Ohio Associated Press as “Best Reporter, Small Market.” , placing 1st in the contest year 2016, which was announced in May 2017. Geftos leads The Restaurant Report Card, seen every Thursday night on the news.
Tony graduated from Riverview Community High Schooll in Detroit, approximately 40 minutes drive north of Toledo. Also participated in University of West Michigan where he was a four-year member of the Bronco Marching Band at 89.1 FM WIDR, Kalamazoo, as part of the evolution of radio.
Tony began his on-air career on WTVG-TV in June 2000 and is currently working as a senior reporter for 13ABC and co-anchor of 13ABC Action News Weekend Mornings. Geftos is broadcast live every Saturday and Sunday from 6am to 8am and again from 9am to 10am alongside McKenzie Kuehnlein. He also hosts Toledo’s one-hour midday news on Thursdays and Fridays and is a co-anchor of the 13ABC Action News Weekend Mornings.
Since joining the network in 2011, Tony and Christina have led the news to Emmy nominations for five straight years. Notably, they won the “Best Weekend News Market 41+” for the 2016 broadcast year in June 2017. During his service with 13ABC, Tony is honored to have received an individual Lower Great Lakes Region Emmy for “Best Breaking News of 2014”. It was for his reporting when a smoldering house fire suddenly reignited during live news and Tony knocked on the doors of nearby houses to alert neighbors.
Prior to working in Toledo, Geftos was an interpretive ranger at the Silent City of Rocks National Reserve in Idaho, contributing to the Times-News in Twin Falls, Idaho. Subsequently, Tony transitioned to television as a reporter at KGWC-TV in Casper, WY, where he met his wife. His next broadcast job was at KKFX-TV in Santa Barbara, California.
Geftos recently published two children’s books based on his own experience of enduring adult chickenpox on Valentine’s Day. “The Heart-Shaped Box” and “A Plague of Heart-Shaped Pox” as illustrated by local cartoonist Don Lee.
