Biography of Uhuru Kenyatta
Uhuru Kenyatta is a Kenyan-born politician and businessman who currently serves as the fourth president of Kenya. There are many details that shocked me during my research on this profile. This is what I found out about him.
Uhuru was born to his father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of the Republic of Kenya. He was raised in a wealthy and politically powerful Kikuyu family. He then joined St. Mary’s School in Nairobi, where he held a winger position on the school’s rugby team. After leaving St. Marys, he flew to Amherst College in Massachusetts to study political science and economics.
After his trip back home, Muigai started his horticulture business making it a success after a short time. In addition, he was invested with some functions in the management of his family estate.
Uhuru became politically active in the mid-1990s, where, in 1997, he became president of KANU (Kenya African National Union), the oldest party that led his father to the presidency. He later ran for a parliamentary seat, but never won. Despite his failure, Daniel Arap Moi, the then president, had him as a mentor. He was always ready to prepare him for a bigger role in the public service.
Moi even appointed him chairman of the Kenya Tourism Board in 1999. A year later, Uhuru had yet another task as chairman of the Disaster Emergency Response Committee.
Uhuru’s political profile has risen above the bars since October 2001, when he was nominated by President Moi to fill the post of Member of Parliament. A month later, he was elevated to the position of Cabinet Minister of the local government.
…….
In the same year, Uhuru was named presidential candidate for Kanu, a controversial move led by President Moi. At that time, Moi was unreadable for another term and therefore wanted Kenyatta to succeed him. However, many people feared that Uhuru becoming president would allow President Moi to have some influence in governance. This succession backfired and Uhuru became the leader of the opposition in parliament.
In 2005, Kenyatta was elected president of KANU. In the run for the Kenyan presidential seat in 2007, Uhuru tried one more time after withdrawing his candidacy in support of Mwai Kibaki. Kibaki’s re-election was against Raila Odinga and several other contestants. Kibaki then narrowly won, defeating Odinga. The defeat was not well received as it brought many controversies that later led to post-election violence.
…….
Upon taking office, Kibaki appointed Uhuru Kenyatta as minister of local government in January 2008. However, after the formation of a coalition government, he was reappointed deputy prime minister as well as minister of commerce. A year later, he was reassigned to be Minister of Finance.
In 2010, Uhuru was named by the International Criminal Court as one of six suspects in the 2007 post-election violence. However, these allegations were declared null and void after he proved his innocence. He then left KANU to form his own party, the National Alliance (TNA). They then joined a Jubilee Party coalition that also included Dr. William Ruto.
The duo then competed as presidential candidates in the 2013 Kenyan presidential election, later as emerging winners. Uhuru was first sworn in as President of Kenya on April 9, 2013. He served as President of the Republic of Kenya for the first term (5 years) until 2017. The duo again went for another term and maps to his current position, the President of Kenya.
